About the inventor
The original Picquic concept appeared on Mac McKenzie's drawing board in 1984. Mac, whose lifelong career was flying, said of his inventive nature: "When you flew aeroplanes in those days, you were either scared stiff or bored to tears, so I had a lot of time to think". Due also to his career and the fact that his life depended on the equipment he flew, he had no patience or interest with things that would break. So when his old fashioned hollow handled multi tip screwdriver broke (the kind with the screw off cap that gets lost or broken, and then loses it's bits), he decided to fix the problem once and for all.
The humble beginnings
Some time later, with patent and prototype in hand, Mac made his best effort to license the invention to an established Canadian multiple bit screwdriver company. The royalty they offered was a raw deal, so Mac wound up licensing the invention to his son Paul and Paul's business partner, Robert Suter. (the other company eventually went bankrupt). In 1987, Rob and Paul set up shop as P.R. Innovations Inc., (now called Picquic Tool Company Inc.) and set about the task of further development of the concept. In August, 1988, the first Picquic Sixpac's came out of the mould and they didn't break or lose bits! The design was an instant hit and the Sixpac soon became the dominant Canadian Multi with Rob and Paul working night and day to keep up with demand. In February, 1989, the Sixpac was judged as the 'Best Canadian Hardware product' by the Canadian hardware and housewares manufacturer's association. This award lent credibility to the company and the product and soon the 'Big hardware companies back east' took notice of the fledgling Picquic name.
In 1991, the success of the original Sixpac became recognized in the USA by winning Popular Mechanics Magazine's 'Design and engineering award'. Also, in 91, a new Picquic was born - the STUBBY, a short version of the design for working in tight spots.
Now, with over 1 million of the original Sixpac sold and seven different screwdrivers along with dozens of screwdriving accessories available from us, Picquic truly has become your one stop screwdriver company.
Picquic - what it means
Over the years, many people have questioned us as to why we settled on the name Picquic. It's this simple: Picquic stands for 'Pick the right bit quick'. Once you experience one of our drivers, you will understand - no other multi changes it's bits as fast as a Picquic because storage of one bit automatically ejects the next bit you need. As you must store the last bit used in order to get another, losing a bit is a virtual impossibility with our patented system.
Consistent quality by design
At Picquic, since the beginning, our primary goal has been to provide a product that is as good or better than high quality single blade screwdrivers, yet with all the convenience of multiple bits in one handle. Our objective is not to store the highest number of bits in any handle, but to put the right bits in the right handle. We combine this philosophy with the highest grade materials and attention to detail to ensure consistently superior, long lasting products. We employ modern manufacturing processes so that we can keep our products affordable for anyone that appreciates true quality and functionality.
Patents
All of our product designs are patented and/or patent pending in many countries. This means you will not find our ingenious instant bit storage system by any other name than Picquic. As well, it means that you won't find cheap imitations, which is your assurance of quality and reliability. This 'protection' allows us to concentrate on making great products and getting them to you for a fair price.
Manufacturing processes
We use a mix of old fashioned 'workhorse' machines (our screw machines, whose predecessors were literally horse driven), along with high technology machinery which we have built for our specific component's needs. Shown here are a few examples of this machinery:

By maintaining as much automation in our plant as practical, we have the advantages of consistency in components production and their assembly and the lowest possible costs for labour which allow us to compete on a worldwide scale. We take great pride in the fact that we do not support the concept of paying people far away pennies a day for their efforts. All of our employees are well paid, highly trained and most importantly, enjoy making Picquics.
Worldwide distribution
You can find our products in many countries and we are always expanding our distributor network. We invite you to contact us for a distributor near you, (or use our Retailer Search feature in the Consumer Support page of this site).
